Sarojini was the oldest daughter of Aghorenath, a Bengali Brahman principal at Nizam’s College, Hyderabad. At the age of 12, she enrolled at the University of Madras. She then went on to study at King’s College in London and Girton College in Cambridge from 1895-1898.
She was taken to India’s Congress Movement and Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement. She was with Gandhi on the Round Table Conference of Indian-British Cooperation’s inconclusive 2nd session (1931). She was with Gandhi when she went to London for the Round Table Conference of Indian-British Cooperation. She supported the Congress Party’s view of defense and then outright hostility towards the Allies when World War II broke out. In 1947, she was elected governor of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), a post she held until her death.
Sarojini Naidu was also an accomplished writer. The Golden Threshold (1905), which was her first collection of poetry, was followed in 1912 by The Bird of Time (1912). In 1914, she was elected fellow of The Royal Society of Literature.
Her encouragement of social reforms and women empowerment was a key part of her life. Many women around the globe are now charged with fighting to secure India’s independence. These were significant events in Nightingale’s Indian life. She was a brilliant statesman, a great author, and a tremendous value to India. This is why many politicians, authors, and social workers continue to be inspired by her political accomplishments. Sarojini Naidu is an inspiration to all women.
